Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii called the Trump administration a “moral dead zone” during her questioning of the smarmy puffed toad of an Attorney General.
Morality has fled governance and the American people are left with an administration of evil, led by a proud ignoramus to whom any fragments of democratic justice are merely fleeting distractions to be overcome by endless lying and bullying.
Trump has infected his Senate sycophants with the belief that if there is no political accountability there can be likewise no moral accountability, and that the caging of children and the encouragement of the worst elements in our society are political necessities that preclude any considerations of right or wrong.
These twisted men and women evidently see no reckoning in this life or beyond for the horrors they are condoning on a daily basis. James Comey has said that Donald Trump “eats your soul little by little.” These people have been a smorgasbord for this moral vampire. They are wanderers now in a landscape denuded of any chance of salvation.
America itself has been long coming to this moral crossroads. The original sin of slavery has stained all the admitted greatness of this experiment in democracy. In this new century, religious and moral rectitude have been relegated by too much of the population to occasional afterthoughts as we trudge on what has become a treadmill to oblivion.
It was not always this way in our pained and glorious past. In the short skein of recent memory, politicians gave both inner and outer voice to considerations of right and wrong and acted accordingly. They feared ultimate accountability – God is one name – and also feared accountability to the people they ostensibly served. They saw their ultimate business as service.
Not so today. So many of our political leaders see their primary role as getting re-elected and spend too much of the time and funds that should go to service on this self-perpetuating disgrace. It is no accident that so many of the politicians on both sides of the aisle are lawyers. Their constituents are no match for their power and greed.
It was not always so. Even in the most bent of politicians, there remained the fear of inevitable accounting. That fear seems to have either vanished or been so destroyed by political expedience that what we have today is a United States Senate that is the handmaiden of evil.
And the electromagnet that has sucked the moral fiber from government is
an endlessly lying president who has never had a moral thought in his too-long and too-destructive life. Donald Trump was created by the worst possible combination of history and the present. He is the Anti-Christ of the Twitter feed. His Bible is in his thumbs and the prints of those stubby digits will remain on the American soul long after Donald Trump is dead and gone.
Are there still enough Americans with the sense of morality that will be needed in what is to be a long and bitter struggle to regain the soul of America and its place among nations?
We will see.
