John McCain said John Dramesi was the toughest guy he ever met.
They met in the Hanoi Hiton where McCain was held and repeatedly tortured for more than five years after being shot down.
Dramesi was the prisoner who made the small American flag out of scraps of cloth. He tried to escape twice and was recaptured both times and the other prisoners suffered grievously because of his attempts. Dramesi said that McCain came to him after the second attempt and asked him not to try again because some of the other prisoners would not survive the Vietcong reprisals on them. Dramesi didn't like that, but he went along for the greater good. He was indeed a tough guy.
He was also a fraternity brother of mine at Rutgers, a senior when I was a freshman, and he he actually radiated toughness, even then.
Donald Trump has the toughness of a marshmallow and is for all the world to see a crazed coward in his endless and compulsive slandering of John McCain, who was for all the world to see a true American patriot and hero.
Trump, a fake bone-spurred draft dodger who has said that escaping venereal disease was his Vietnam, has also said that he doesn't like people who were captured, despicable as that sounds. McCain was a bomber pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam and captured there. I guess Trump thinks he should have just hiked on back to South Vietnam. Trump has as little knowledge of the military as he does of the Constitution.
And Donald Trump doesn't have a patriotic bone in his flabby body. Can you imagine him with a G.I. buzz cut? Or with a D.I. In his puffy face?
Donald Trump, grand master of reality “You're Fired!” television, doesn't even have the heart to fire anyone face to face in what there is of his real life, which seems to be spent mainly in frantic bouts of panicked tweeting.
Dramesi died in 2017, but if he was alive today and heard Trump's slandering of McCain, I have the feeling that he would use his hero's status to get into the White House and a meeting with Trump and punch Trump in his slack-jawed mouth for all the world to see, Secret Service be hanged.
The ghost of John McCain haunts Trump like a Dickens' phantom, a patriot who stood up to Trump every inch of the way and walked onto the Senate floor late one night and upset Trump's evil plan to kill Obamacare. Trump was expressly not invited to McCain's funeral, but had the gall to send his whey-faced daughter and her pallid husband to crash the service, where they were rightfully ignored.
These are perilous times for America and indeed the world because of the arch coward in the White House. Would that patriots like John McCain and John Dramesi were still alive to stand against this monster.
Our country has lost its moral footing in the avalanche of lies and craziness spewing from Pennsylvania Avenue. We cannot depend on the Robert Muellers and all the current investigations to pull us from the Trump Swamp.
We must each stand up and be counted as the patriots that were John McCain and John Dramesi.
