When I was a freshman at Rutgers way way back in the day, one of the guys from my hometown of Collingswood had a roommate from Toms River, then the cranberry capital of the universe.
We all thought this guy was a little off, and when one night he told me this story, I knew he was really round the bend: he said that he had been out one balmy spring evening, looking over his family’s cranberry bogs, when he was actually scooped up by aliens in a flying saucer and taken on a space cruise that included a journey past the dark side of the moon, which he described as – guess what? – dark.
He dropped out after the first semester and whenever I hear or read about alien stories, I think of him – briefly.
So imagine my surprise when I received the following E-mail from him: “Hello, Bob. Maybe you remember me telling you of my alien abduction when we were at Rutgers. Since then, I have achieved a Ph.D. in molecular biology and recently retired as a tenured professor at a small Midwestern university.
“I have been following your writings about our current president with interest and would like to share some important information. I have never mentioned my alien abduction since our Rutgers days for obvious reasons, but I feel you should know this and put it out to the widest possible audience.
“I was visited in my home recently by a seemingly normal human being who introduced himself as a space alien who has been living on earth for several centuries. To erase my doubts, he told me in detail about my ‘abduction’ from Toms River.
“This visitor went on to tell me about his civilization’s growing alarm at the actions of our current president. He said that Donald Trump’s evil predecessors like Pol Pot and especially Adolph Hitler had given his race pause, but that they saw in humankind the ability to overcome even such monsters.
“Now, though, he went on, they see Trump’s lethal ability to provoke and pursue a nuclear conflict as unprecedented and a viable risk to end our time on earth. He said that his race has taken a hand in such earthly endeavors as the pyramids, the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, and many other unexplained earthly phenomena. He gave no reason for these alien intrusions, but I had the feeling that they were acting at the behest of a higher power, beyond our comprehension.
“He said that our civilization is in true and final jeopardy, and that if we find no way to bridle what he called ‘the dark impulses’ of Donald Trump, his race will abandon us to our own gloomy demise.
“When I asked him what we can do to forestall the end of mankind, he smiled sadly and shook his head in palpable dismay.
“’You must look within the soul of mankind – such as it is now,’ he said, ‘and determine if there still remains the striving for the light that has seen your civilization through every prior catastrophe.’
“’We can no longer be your guide. You must step forward or perish.’”
He signed his E-mail, “Hopefully.”
